How Long Will the Countermeasures Against the Scattering of Kyushu-Kanto Cypress and Tohoku Cedar Pollen on Pollen Sunday Last? (Presented by Weather Forecaster Tomomi Yoshida on April 02, 2023 at Japan Weather Association’s Tenki.jp)

On Sunday, countermeasures against pollen are necessary in Kyushu and Kanto areas for Hinoki cypress and in Tohoku area for cedar pollen. The duration of countermeasures is uncertain. The pollen count will be “high” or “slightly high” today from Kyushu to Tohoku. Cypress pollen is expected to spread from Kyushu to Kanto, and cedar pollen is likely to scatter in Tohoku. Precautions should be taken when going out.

There will still be several days of mass scattering starting from Monday when the pollen count will be “extremely high.” Wearing masks and glasses are highly recommended. However, the weather will be unfavorable from the west half of this week, which might decrease the amount of pollen dispersal in Kyushu on Thursday and Kinki and Tokai on Friday. So people with hay fever will feel relieved.

The peak of cedar pollen has passed from Kyushu to Tokai. But, the peak of cypress pollen will continue until mid-April. Although the Hokuriku, Kanto, and Tohoku regions have passed the peak of cedar pollen counts, the amount of pollen dispersal is high this year. So, we should not let our guard down even after the peak has passed. Also, in the Kanto region, the peak of cypress pollen will continue until mid-April. Even after the cypress pollen peak has passed, pollen continues to fly in the Kanto region until around Golden Week every year. Therefore, it is safe to continue taking measures for a while if you have hay fever.

To alleviate the symptoms of hay fever, it is vital to avoid pollen. Putting on a mask and goggles and being mindful of clothing are necessary. Glasses can reduce about 40% of pollen entering the eye. Masks can reduce the amount of inhaled pollen from about 1/3 to 1/6. Choosing the right-sized mask is essential. Applying gauze to the inside of the mask (inner mask) can further reduce pollen entering the nose. Pollen adheres more quickly to wool clothing than cotton or synthetic fibers. Hence, people should avoid wearing woolen clothes on the outside and prefer jackets with a smooth surface when going out.

However, the weather is going downhill from the west in the second half of this week, and the amount of pollen dispersal is likely to be suppressed in Kyushu on the 6th (Thursday) and in Kinki and Tokai on the 7th (Friday). People with hay fever will feel a little relieved.

Is pollen season coming to an end?

From Kyushu to Tokai, the peak of cedar pollen has passed. However, the peak of cypress pollen will continue until mid-April.

Although the Hokuriku, Kanto, and Tohoku regions have already passed the peak of cedar pollen counts, we cannot let our guard down even after the peak has passed, as the amount of pollen dispersal is large this year. Also, in the Kanto region, the peak of cypress pollen will continue until mid-April.

Even after the cypress pollen peak has passed, pollen continues to fly in the Kanto region until around Golden Week every year.

If you have hay fever, it is safe to continue taking measures for a while.

Measures against pollen when going out

It is important to avoid pollen to alleviate the symptoms of hay fever. Put on a mask and goggles, and devise your clothes.

① Glasses
Experimental results show that the amount of pollen entering the eye is reduced by about 40% compared to when glasses are not used, and the amount of pollen entering the eye is reduced by about 65% with protective covers for hay fever.

② Mask
I think that many people use it to prevent infectious diseases, but the amount of pollen inhaled can be reduced from about 1/3 to 1/6. It is important to choose a mask that fits your face. In addition, it is known that applying gauze to the inside of the mask (inner mask) further reduces pollen entering the nose.

③ Ingenuity of clothing
In general, pollen adheres more easily to wool clothing than cotton or synthetic fibers, making it easier to bring pollen indoors. Pollen sticks to wool more easily than cotton, about 10 times. When you go out, avoid wearing woolen clothes on the outside and choose a jacket with a smooth surface.
