How March 21 was established – 2024-03-21 15:14:53

“If you can not find spring, you make it

Yes, you make it.

Every time from the beginning.

More and more alive.

More and more watered down.

Yes, you make it.

With those colors that mean harmony.

And with those words that indicate a beginning.

Yes, you make it.

With that light, which can give you Heaven.

And with those flowers that smell of life.

Yes, you make it.

With that scent of the immortal, Hope.

And with that Faith that will make you not afraid.

Yes, you make it.

With pure materials for your soul.

And with simple moments that give eternal joys

Where they hear you in silence.

And they don’t need words to explain.

Yes, you make it.

With those dreams that will fill you with promises.

And with those smiles that will show you how you should live.

Because if you don’t carry Spring inside you, you have to learn to build it.

From the worst darkness to the brightest light.

Never let her go.

Because the stronger she enters, the easier she drives the winters out of your heart.

Love her Spring.

Not only for the beautiful and light clothes you wear.

Never mind the blue skies it gives you.

But for the Renaissance that makes you live.

That sweet air that cools your soul.

And that sun that gives you warmth.

So give it a taste.

Like that heavy and sweet one that only Love can give.

And do not be upset if it suddenly disappears or simply does not come to you.

Because if you don’t find Spring, you make it.”

The poem comes from a collection “Ek tu plision”, published two years after the death of Elytis, summarizing his long poetic journey: from the youthful age of his surrealist experiments to the years of heyday and maturity, which come with “Maria Nefeli” and the “Little Nautilus”.

How was World Poetry Day established?

World Poetry Day is a Greek initiative. Its initial inspiration belongs to the poet Michael Mitras, who in the fall of 1997 proposed to the Society of Writers that the celebration of poetry be adopted in Greece, as in other countries, and that a specific day be set for it.

The idea for the day of celebration belongs to the poet Lydia Stefanou, who proposed March 21 as the day of the vernal equinox, which combines light on one side and darkness on the other, like poetry, which combines its bright face with of optimism with the dark face of mourning.

The first Poetry Day was celebrated in 1998 at the old post office in Kotzia Square.

Suggestions to entertain yourself with free admission.

Free at Benaki for World Poetry Day

The Benaki Museum celebrates World Poetry Day this year with a tribute to poetry set to music. First editions, personal items, manuscripts, photographs from the Museum Archives, but also emblematic documents, such as the two Greek Nobel Prizes for Literature, compose the portraits of important poets and musicians.

Lyrics by Yiannis Ritsos, Odysseus Elytis and Nikos Gatsos will be combined with the staves of two leading musicians, Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadzidakis.

Songs that we have all loved and sung will be heard live in the halls of the Museum so that we can remember them together with our loved ones, old and young. With Despina Stefanidou on piano and singing.
