The climatic disturbances that we are currently seeing raise a question: could we control the weather? Cause rain or prevent bad weather? Apparently not, but yet a technique has existed for a long time and it allows to “stimulate” the clouds.
What if we were able to control when the rain would fall? Or on the contrary, to be able to stop it at our leisure? Hard to imagine it and yet a technique exists to control the rain.
In the United Arab Emirates, one of the driest countries in the world, it has even become a priority. A plane soon takes off towards the clouds with, placed on its wing, about twenty tubes filled with chemicals supposed to cause rain.
“The plane will climb in altitude and place itself in a very humid layer, which already contains some clouds“, specifies Sébastien Doutreloup, climatologist at the University of Liège. “It will release small particles which will act as a condensation nucleus for the water droplets“.

This technique is called cloud seeding and it is not new. Born in 1946, it was invented to fight against intense drought. Today, it is estimated that the process can increase the amount of precipitation by up to 20%. “It doesn’t necessarily increase precipitation where you want it“, specifies the climatologist. “You really need a good weather analysis before going to seed, but there will always be a part of randomness“.
Making it rain on command could provide drinking water, but also improve the quality of the air when it is very polluted. In some cases, the technique could also cause some tension. “If a country is going to rain or is going to capture all the precipitation from a cloud, all the rain will fall on the same country and not on the country that follows“.
“I make it rain”
For 40,000 euros, Eric Jadoul, fruit grower, acquired a cannon capable, in the event of a storm, of causing rain before the formation of hailstones. No scientific study demonstrates the effectiveness of his machine, but Eric is convinced.
He explains that his technique is also useful for neighboring farmers who have never seen a hailstone since the arrival of the cannon.
