Kenyan President William Ruto has called on the Sudanese to put an end to the conflict which he described as “absurd”, which has pitted the regular Sudanese army against the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since mid-April.

Ruto was speaking on Thursday at the ‘Africa Climate Change Conference’, held at the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa.

He said the fighting generals in Sudan bombed everything including military equipment, hospitals, roads, bridges and airports.

“We have to tell the generals to stop this senseless fighting,” he said.

The Kenyan President stressed that military capability should be used against terrorists and criminals and not against children and women or to destroy infrastructure.

Ruto also noted that the African Union (AU) does not have enough power to end these crises because security and peace efforts depend on foreign support.

Noting that the AU budget is mainly provided by developed countries, Ruto said funds should be created for the latter.

Since April 15, Sudan has been the scene of fighting between the regular army and the paramilitaries in Khartoum. Both sides accuse each other of having started the hostilities.

In 2013, the RSF were formed to support government forces in their fight against armed rebel movements in the Darfur region (west). These paramilitary units subsequently took on other missions, including the fight against irregular migration at the borders and the maintenance of order, before being qualified as “rebels” by the army, following the outbreak of hostilities.
