It’s a well-known phenomenon: Instead of getting rid of the cold in peace at night, many people suffer from a persistent cough.

It is generally recommended to get enough sleep as it is considered the best medicine. As if by magic, cold symptoms worsen as soon as we turn off the bedside lamp and lie down. This even goes so far that we lie awake half the night, even though we desperately need our sleep right now.

The reason for this is, among other things, gravity. If we lie down, the nasal secretions reach the throat more quickly and lead to a dry cough. In addition, the nose is usually blocked when you have a cold. Because we then inevitably breathe mostly through our mouth, our throat is dry, which also irritates the cough receptors and makes us cough even more.
