In order to receive billions in frozen EU funding, Hungary, under pressure from Brussels, created an authority to control EU funds. However, this authority turns out to be a toothless tiger.
Last year there was a nerve-racking tug-of-war between the EU Commission and the right-wing nationalist government of Viktor Orbán for months before Budapest agreed to the creation of an integrity authority. The mission of the authority, which has been active since the end of 2022, has been clearly defined by both sides: It is intended to ensure that no more mischief is carried out with EU funds that flow to Hungary. According to the Commission, that is exactly what the Orbán government is accused of: the large-scale misuse of EU funding.
