Here’s how to properly examine your moles

According to the doctor Marie Sophie Gautier, there are signs that are unmistakable in moles. If a nevus different from the others appears, don’t panic, here are the lesions at risk:

Asymmetrical moles (neither round nor oval) With irregular edges Inhomogeneous colors With a diameter greater than 6 millimeters Changing rapidly over a few months due to their size, shape or color (“ABCDE” rule).

20% of Irregular moles then turn into melanomas. If this is the case, it is better to have it removed according to the dermatologist. The surgical operation lasts 30 minutes under local anesthesia. The technique involves incising the skin around the nevus with a scalpel, removing it, then suturing the wound. Finally, the removed lesion is sent to a pathological analysis laboratory (under a microscope) in order to determine its malignant nature.

However, be careful with the CO2 laser, the skin cancer specialist warns. Used mainly to remove unsightly moles, this technique is not recommended since it does not allow anatomopathological examination of the nevus. However, this examination is essential to guarantee the benign nature of the lesion.

This surgical operation in case of melanoma

If a melanoma is identified, the doctor makes a new incision around the scar from the first excision, to remove a strip of healthy skin which can be 1 to 2 cm. Greater than or equal to 1 mm, it will also be necessary to remove the first lymph node as close as possible to the tumor in order to analyze it and determine if it is affected. Very often, if the cancer remains limited to the skin, excision allows complete healing.
