Huawei: the Mate 60 Pro overshadows the iPhone 15 on the Chinese market

According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, Huawei has sold 1.6 million Mate 60 Pros, its latest high-end smartphone, in China. A result obtained in just six weeks, in a market that is constantly decelerating worldwide. This is a great feat for the Chinese group, which has been blacklisted by the United States for several years.

And the recent arrival of Apple’s iPhone 15 on the market has not slowed the trend since, according to CounterPoint Research, the Mate 60 Pro has sold more than 400,000 copies over the last two weeks. The firm’s data on iPhone sales is hardly encouraging, since the latter are below those of the iPhone 14 over the same period in 2022. The iPhone 15 actually shows a decline of 4.5 % compared to its illustrious predecessor.

The launch of the Mate 60 Pro at the end of August did not go unnoticed. The red petal firm used a chip made in China, which clearly shows that the country is managing to overcome technological sanctions imposed by the United States.

Chinese chip sovereignty

Huawei and the Chinese chip manufacturer Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) have indeed developed a 7 nanometer microprocessor to equip the Mate 60 Pro. This chip, the Kirin 9000s, constitutes a considerable advance in the manufacturing of this type of component by China, at a time when everything is being done by the United States to restrict the technological capabilities of the Middle Kingdom in terms of chips.

Beijing, which intends to do without any external aid, intends to launch an investment fund with around 40 billion dollars to develop the sector and catch up in the field of chips. The objective is to create Chinese semiconductor champions.

For Apple, this new competition is bad news in a market which represents 22% of total iPhone sales in the first half of 2023. The 4.5% drop in sales still represents 12 million fewer units, which is far from negligible.

The Mate 60s would score points, particularly in the photo area. They would perform better than the iPhone 15, according to certain benchmarks. The Mate 60 Pro+ was particularly talked about because of its capabilities in macro. The macro lens uses the combination of two innovative technologies, notably allowing focusing down to 3.5 cm.
