Hundreds of Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists blocked the A10 motorway in Amsterdam shortly before 12:30 p.m. The dam is near the former headquarters of ING. XR says they won’t leave the highway until the Dutch bank stops “financing climate change.”
The mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, banned the blockade. The municipality described the choice of the highway as the location of the demonstration as “irresponsible”. Another location had been designated for the action.
Extinction Rebellion’s demands are “not realistic”, an ING spokesperson said. “We also had a conversation with them last week. But when we tell them that we do not immediately accept what they demand, they choose this way of imposing their will. We find this unacceptable,” said the spokesperson.
