Hundreds of Sheep Walk in a Circle for More Than 10 Days Nonstop | Ecology

They have been on the move since November 4.

Hundreds of sheep have been circling strangely for 12 days.

Surveillance cameras at a farm in northern China show the large herd continuously marching clockwise in a near-perfect circle.

Video of the bizarre scene was posted to Twitter on Wednesday by China’s state-run People’s Daily, which said the sheep are in perfect health and the cause of the behavior remains a mystery.

The sheep owner said the show started with a few sheep before the whole herd joined them.

If the farm has 34 sheepfolds, only the sheep of one of them, the 13ᵉ, behaved in this way.

Some have speculated that the sheep’s behavior could be caused by a bacterial disease called listeriosis, also known as “circles disease”.

“At first, affected animals are anorexic, depressed and disoriented. They may propel themselves around corners, lean against stationary objects, or spin in circles towards the affected side,” according to some studies.

A hypothesis that does not really explain this strange phenomenon, since in sheep and goats, death generally occurs within 24 to 48 hours after the onset of symptoms.
