British engineering firm JCB has shattered the world land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Retired Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green drove the twin-engine Hydromax streamliner to an average speed of 406.320 mph on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, marking a major milestone for zero-emission internal combustion technology.
Hydrogen combustion achieved a decisive new benchmark on the desert salt as JCB’s purpose-built streamliner eclipsed decades-old speed limits. The vehicle completed the mandatory two runs in opposite directions over a measured mile within an hour, recording 400.623 mph on the first pass and 412.135 mph on the return, according to Autocar. The resulting average of 406.320 mph (653.909 km/h) established a provisional world record that is now awaiting final ratification by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
Engineering a 1,600-Horsepower Hydrogen Machine
The record-breaking vehicle bears little resemblance to conventional road transport. Measuring 32 feet long, the Hydromax is powered by two 4.8-litre hydrogen internal combustion engines developed by JCB and reworked with assistance from Ricardo, as reported by Rediff. Rather than feeding hydrogen into a fuel cell to generate electricity, the streamliner mixes pressurized hydrogen gas with air and ignites it directly inside upgraded production blocks derived from JCB’s industrial digger line.

Each engine has been heavily modified to produce 800 horsepower, pushing total output to 1,600 horsepower with a combined torque figure of 2,600 lb-ft distributed through an all-wheel-drive system, Ars Technica noted. Engineers doubled engine speed to 3,800 rpm, replaced pushrod valves with double overhead camshafts, introduced high-pressure direct fuel injection, and incorporated twin ice tanks to cool air leaving the turbochargers from 392° F down to below 50° F.
Shattering Decades-Old Benchmarks on the Bonneville Salt Flats
The successful runs at Bonneville obliterated several prior category records overseen by motorsport’s global governing body. The previous FIA-officiated benchmark for a hydrogen internal combustion vehicle stood at 185.5 mph, Newstalk ZB reported, set by BMW’s H2R research prototype in 2004. The Hydromax also surpassed the fastest hydrogen fuel cell record of 303 mph, set by the Buckeye Bullet 2 in 2009, and even eclipsed the electric vehicle land speed record of 341 mph set by VBB3 in 2016.

The project represents a nostalgic return to the Utah salt pans for Green and JCB. Exactly two decades earlier, Green piloted the JCB Dieselmax to a diesel land speed record of 350.092 mph. Green also retains his place in aviation and motoring history as the only person to break the sound barrier on land, having driven the jet-powered Thrust SSC to 763.035 mph in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert in 1997.
Industrial Stakes Behind the Salt Flats Run
Beyond motorsport glory, the high-speed trial serves as a high-visibility demonstration for heavy industry. JCB has invested £100 million (more than $134 million) into its hydrogen engine development program, arguing that batteries remain impractical for heavy-duty construction and agricultural equipment due to excessive weight, long charging times, and demanding operational cycles.

While environmental analysts note that most commercial hydrogen is still produced from fossil fuels, JCB has secured agreements to source green hydrogen generated via renewable energy.
What Lies Ahead for Ratification and Testing
With the practical speed trials concluded on the salt flats, the attempt now enters the formal administrative phase. Officials from the Automobile Competition Committee of the US worked alongside local technical teams to oversee vehicle scrutineering, safety inspections, and independent timing verification, the FIA confirmed.
The provisional 406.320 mph mark remains subject to formal review and ratification by the FIA Land Speed Records Commission. As engineering teams analyze telemetry data from the twin-engine streamliner, the success establishes hydrogen combustion as a viable, high-performance alternative for heavy-duty sectors seeking immediate carbon reduction without relying exclusively on battery electrification.
