I Bought A Lot Of Stuff & I Need The Money, Frankly

Jim Carrey Returns to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Universe, Jokes About Retirement

The iconic comic actor reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming sequel, revealing his humorous reasoning for coming back.

Jim Carrey is back as the maniacal Dr. Robotnik in the highly anticipated “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” While promoting the film at its UK premiere in London, Carrey injected his trademark humor when discussing his return to the franchise, playfully suggesting his decision was driven by a combination of artistic passion and, well, financial obligations.

“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” he quipped. “And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly. Yeah,” Carrey told the Associated Press.

From Retirement to Robotnik: Carrey’s Shifting Plans

Carrey’s comments might come as a surprise to some, given his statement in 2022 about retiring from acting. While promoting the second “Sonic the Hedgehog” film, he expressed a desire to step back from the industry.

“I’m being fairly serious,” he said at the time in an interview. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.”

When asked about his previous retirement announcement during the “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” premiere, Carrey playfully clarified, “That might have been hyperbole.”

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’: A New Adventure with Familiar Faces

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” picks up where its predecessor left off, promising another thrilling adventure for the beloved video game hedgehog and his friends. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles face a new threat in the form of Shadow the Hedgehog, a mysterious figure with formidable power. Forced to forge an unlikely alliance with their old nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, the heroes must band together to protect the world from this new danger.

The film boasts an impressive voice cast, featuring Ben Schwartz returning as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves joining the franchise as Shadow. The live-action cast includes Carrey reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik, alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, Lee Majdoub, Tom Butler, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and Alyla Browne.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is set to hit U.S. theaters on December 20.
