CASE: 16-year-old Seydou and his cousin, Moussa, live in poverty in a village in Senegal. They dream of living in Europe, where, they think, anything is possible: even a musical career for Seydoux. Their lives are not in immediate danger, and their poverty is compensated by a united family. But their ignorance of danger and their teenage dream of a glamorous life in an idealized Europe are stronger. Their journey begins with hope but continues as an unimaginable Odyssey full of Laistrygons and Cyclops, during which they lose their humanity. Garrone differs from most directors who follow the adventures of their immigrant heroes either at the border, or in the host country, which usually does not welcome them only as a “Promised Land”. He chooses to follow them from the beginning on their journey to Africa, as they cross deserts and seas. On a journey that turns from a dream into a nightmare: lucrative smugglers, modern day slave traders, corrupt police, mobsters who steal, extort and torture desperate migrants in Libya: a chain of unimaginable exploitation that the viewer watches with bated breath.
With mastery but also great sensitivity, the creator marries harsh naturalism with dreamlike scenes and apothecary lyrical emotion that impresses the mind, delivering us an epic film about the sufferings of our times, the fight for survival and the contradictions of human nature.
