In Peru there are 1,829 alternative basic education centers (CEBA) that teach classes to those who work during the day or who, for various reasons, have stopped studying.
To date, 12,894 teachers teach classes, from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm, to 188,544 students, including even complete families. What is it like to teach at night? Three teachers tell us about it in our ‘I dedicate myself to’ section.
NIGHT EDUCATION TEACHERS
Professor Magda Retamozo Naraza has 19 years of service at CEBA Mercedes Indacochea in Barranco. She teaches in the area of Science, Technology and Health at the secondary level.
Students of different ages and realities come to his classroom, but with the same dream: to finish school. “These are kids who work, who study, who are in the military, who need much more help,” he said.
Her work in night education classrooms goes beyond being a teacher. In this regard, Professor Magda Retamozo indicated: “They have many problems, but despite this they are coming. At the moment in which they decay, we accompany them and talk.
Another professor is Jesús Torres Pizarro, who has been serving the same institution for 12 years. She leads the night intermediate primary cycle.
“We have been working with inclusive students. They became so many that they appointed me as an inclusive teacher. They seek care and help to learn to read and write, ”she remarked.
Whole families attend his salon. This is the case of Mrs. Margarita and her children. The older than 20 started studying 7 years ago and she, who had not finished school, was encouraged to finish it at CEBA. Her 13-year-old son also takes classes with them.
On the other hand, in San Isidro, Professor Alberto Villanueva works at CEBA Alfonso Ugarte. He studied and graduated from night school with great effort. Today he has a 28-year career as a teacher and he never tires of encouraging his students to keep going.
“It is a great joy to see students who came to study and then continue their studies in universities or institutes. This improves their living conditions, ”he emphasized.
