“I don’t know why this contact happened”

Already in the wall during his first Indianapolis 500 the previous week, Romain Grosjean (Andretti) kissed the wall again during qualifying for the Detroit Grand Prix, this Saturday, June 4.

The Frenchman was trying to find a place at the end of Fast 12 in order to continue the session in Fast 6, but the last corners of his last attempt trapped him. A first hit against the concrete wall shattered its left rear suspension, sending the Dallara out of control heading into the next corner.

« It was quite a shockdeclared a few minutes later the former Formula 1 driver, who is using an exceptional all-green livery this weekend instead of the usual yellow. Before he could dissect the accident with his team, the Frenchie, second in the Long Beach Grand Prix a few weeks earlier, could not explain this crash:

“We fear, I don’t know why. We had however worked very well during Free Practice 1 on Friday as well as in Free Practice 2 this (Saturday) morning. The tires let us down. I don’t know why, we couldn’t continue at the same pace. »

The first contact against the wall damaged the left rear suspension, but I don’t know why this contact happened. I haven’t tried anything different from the previous flying lap, so I don’t understand. We just need to analyze (what happened) and be better. Obviously, that’s not what we want. »

Romain Grosjean will start on Sunday from 12th place. His compatriot Simon Pagenaud (Meyer Shank Racing) set the third fastest time.
