Lyricist Javed Akhtar narrated the story behind the super hit song ‘Tum Ko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aaya’ released in 1982. Javed Akhtar said that he wrote the lyrics of the song in just nine minutes and wrote it when he was under the influence of alcohol. He was speaking at a special program of FICCI in Kolkata.
‘I have written songs for nine minutes. After Yash Chopra’s Silsila, his assistant asked me if I could write songs for his new film. He had no money then. But I agreed to write it. The last song was delayed by being written for free. That poor man would come every evening and ask me for a song. I was a regular drinker at that time.
Every day we would drink and talk about the news. So one day at 2 am we decided that we would finish the song the next day. But I delayed it. The very next night, when he asked for a song, I had drunk eight or nine pegs. But I decided to finish writing the song. So the pen and paper were written down. He was looking at his watch from time to time as he had to catch the next train. I wrote and completed the song in just nine minutes and handed it over to him. “That’s how ‘Tum Ko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aayah’ was born,” said Javed Akhtar.
The song ‘Tum Ko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aayah’ is from the movie ‘Saath Saath’. Kuldeep Singh composed the music. The song is sung by Jagjeet Singh and Chitra Singh. Farooq Shaikh, Deepti Naval, Satish Shah, Neena Gupta etc. are the lead actors in the film ‘Saath Saath’.
