At 40, Julien Casoli is one of the emblematic figures of para-athletics (T54). Multiple medalist on a European and international scale, the Haut-Saönois hopes to write new lines on his record during the world championships (July 8-17).

How are you currently feeling?

The start of the season is not too bad. At the Dubai meeting, I broke my record in the 1500m and 5000m. I have the form. I had a good winter of preparation. Next week, I’m going to Switzerland to play big competitions, which will allow me to see if I’m going fast or not. I will continue with a big preparation in June to refine the details.

What are your goals for Paris world championships ?

The goal is to go to the final. This year, I have the potential to get a podium, that would be really good (smile). I will line up for the 800, 1500 and 5000 m. On these three distances, I find the same adversaries and the same efforts. In the meetings I did this year, I performed well over the three distances. I can’t tell you where I’m the best. Afterwards, I have a preference for the 1500 m. This race suits me quite well because it starts less strongly than the 800. I have more difficulty starting at the start (smile).

You have been part of the France team for almost 20 years and have played at the highest level. How do you explain your longevity?

Envy (smile). You also have to question yourself from time to time: Why is it going or not? As long as I perform well, I stay in the peloton. I will try to go to the Paralympic Games in Paris. I really came back to the best in the world. In all the races I do, I’m in the top 5 this season. It’s nice at the end of your career to come back to a great level.

Will these Parisian world championships be the last of your career?

I don’t know… (hesitation) We’re going to say yes. In addition it is in Paris so it is a joy to do your last shopping in your country. There will be a questioning after the Paralympic Games in 2024, because after a while, you have to stop. My first selection for the France team dates back to 2005… I’ve seen athletes pass. The times continue to evolve, especially since the Tokyo Games. That’s why you always have to question yourself and try to understand how others are doing to go faster.
