Rabat – The Moroccan army announced, on Saturday, the launch of the 20th session of the “African Lion” maneuvers, during the period from 20 to 31 May this year.

This came in a statement by the General Command of the Royal Armed Forces (Army), published by the official Moroccan News Agency.

The statement stated: “In implementation of the instructions of King Mohammed VI, Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, the Royal Armed Forces and the American Armed Forces are jointly organizing, from May 20 to 31, the 20th session of the African Lion exercise.”

The statement pointed out that the large-scale maneuvers will be held with the participation of about 7,000 members of the armed forces of about 20 countries, in addition to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), along with the Royal Armed Forces and their American counterpart.

“African Lion 2024” includes several activities, including joint land, sea and air tactical exercises, day and night, a special forces exercise and air force operations, as well as an operational planning exercise, according to the statement.

The statement explained that the exercise “contributes to enhancing joint operational, technical and procedural interoperability between the participating armies, and is considered the largest exercise conducted in Africa, and an important forum in which military frameworks exchange information, procedures and experiences, especially in the fields of training and joint training.”

He pointed out that the twentieth session of the exercise “confirms the sustainability of cooperation between the Royal Armed Forces and the American Armed Forces, in line with the strong historical ties that exist between the two countries.”

In 2007, the first edition of the “African Lion” maneuvers was launched between Morocco and the United States. The maneuvers are held annually with the participation of European and African countries, and are sometimes organized in more than one edition in one year.
