Ignorance and poverty are major causes of early marriage in Matrouh

Dr. Ghada Saber Abul-Atta, Assistant Professor of Mental Health, Faculty of Early Childhood, Matrouh University, said that one of the most important negative effects of early marriage or the girl’s marriage before 18 years is emotional deprivation and the collapse of childhood dreams, as the girl is deprived of the right to enjoy a period of childhood full of activity, vitality, play and personality formation. In addition to the deprivation of education, as well as the incomplete physical, sexual and mental development of the girl. This came during a symposium organized by the Women’s Club of the Young Muslim Women Association.

She emphasized that ignorance and poverty are among the most important reasons that lead to early marriage, which are common causes in all marriages of this kind, in addition to the wrong customs and traditions and the lack of economic awareness, which turns the girl into a commodity sold by her guardian to get rid of the burden of living.

She pointed to the need to raise awareness among poor families of the various effects of underage marriage, in addition to the need for civil society institutions, in cooperation with state institutions, to play their role in eliminating the causes of this phenomenon, including providing job opportunities for young people and encouraging the establishment of small projects, as well as paying attention to the development of girls and introducing them to their rights and duties. .

Last Friday, Major General Khaled Shoaib, Governor of Matrouh, met with Dr. Dalia Refaat Farid Hassan, director of the Al-Dawa project, as part of the implementation of the national initiative to empower girls under the auspices of Mrs. Intisar Al-Sisi, the wife of the President of the Republic, and within the Egyptian family development project.

The Governor of Matrouh referred to the governorate’s efforts in cooperation with the National Council for Women in making certificates of proof of registration, documentation of marriage, birth certificates and other papers that prove women’s rights and define their duties and responsibilities, while respecting the customs and traditions presented for the existence of many honorable models for women, including Dr. Salima Abdel Rahim, rapporteur of the National Council For women in Matrouh, Dr. Um Al-Ezz Braik, director of the Information Center, and Dr. Tahani Farag, challenged illiteracy to obtain a doctorate.
