ASTRONOMY – This shower of shooting stars has once again amazed astronomy fans. Like every year, in August, the Perseids crossed the sky for two nights. Behind this poetic name, we find comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which takes 133 years to go around the Sun and whose debris enters the Earth’s atmosphere every year at the same time.

As you can see in the video at the top of the article, these meteors offered a magnificent spectacle in the Balkan region, south of Eastern Europe. On the Croatian island of Lastovo, in the Adriatic Sea, curious people gathered on the evening of August 12 and 13 to watch the show.

Visible from Mont Blanc

Mario Cuvelic, originally from the tourist town of Split, prefers this vantage point to watch from the sky. ” It’s not the first time I’ve come here, but it’s the first time I’ve seen so many stars. The visibility is really excellent and literally every two minutes a star falls, big or small, and it’s really impressive to see. ».

What allows such visibility is the fact that there is almost no light pollution. This is why it is often recommended to move away from the city to be able to observe the stars well. On the island of Lastovo, the open location also allowed observers to contemplate the Milky Way, recognizable by its large size and whitish appearance.

In the Balkans, other countries have benefited from an unobstructed view of the meteor shower, notably in North Macedonia and Albania. In France too, the spectacle was clearly visible, as shown by the video taken from Mont-Blanc and which you can find in our montage.
