IMF Chooses Valencia for Its First Tech Hub Outside the United States

The International Monetary Fund has selected Valencia to host its first technological center outside of the United States, establishing a digital operations and cybersecurity hub inside the early 20th-century Palacio de Calatayud.

Restoring the Palacio de Calatayud

The facility will occupy a historic public building located on Calle Micalet adjacent to the city's cathedral, with its final renovation phase slated for completion before the end of the year. Juanfran Pérez Llorca, president of the Generalitat Valenciana, confirmed that the regional administration is ceding the property to house the new digital infrastructure.

Global Digital Resilience and Specialized Staffing

The new establishment will provide IT services, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence tools, and specialized technological support for the organization’s global operations. These capabilities are designed to reinforce the institution’s digital resilience across its member countries. While neither the fund nor the governments involved have disclosed total headcount projections, the regional administration outlines a roster of high-value technical roles, including software engineers, cybersecurity specialists, cloud architects, and data analysts.

Choosing Locations Based on Academic Proximity

The establishment will launch gradually as administrative and operational capacities scale up. According to regional officials, the project emerged from an evaluation process that reviewed technological ecosystems, talent pools, and international connectivity. Proximity to local academic institutions and high concentrations of university students played a central role in the selection criteria.

Valencia’s Growing Multilateral Corridor

Valencia joins a growing roster of international organizations utilizing the region for critical digital infrastructure. The United Nations maintains its Information and Communications Technology Facility (UNICTF) in nearby Quart de Poblet. Meanwhile, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) operates out of Alicante, and the Asian Development Bank runs a dedicated technology center within Valencia.

Fostering Regional Research and Development

The global lender’s arrival is expected to act as a catalyst for the regional digital ecosystem. Plans involve direct collaboration with local universities, research institutions, and technology firms to foster specialized talent and advance research and development initiatives in cloud computing and data analytics.
