Joe Biden repeated today that he believes in a diplomatic solution with Iran. Is he trying to give Iran one last chance or does he really believe this nonsense?
To get a bomb, you need about 85% enrichment. Iranians passed the 70% enrichment threshold several months ago. They made new centrifuges. They disconnected cameras that tracked their uranium enrichment activities. They perfected their missiles.
But, following the fable of diplomacy, the Iranians would not want to build nuclear weapons.
They did not observe that Ukraine would probably not have been attacked if it had kept its atomic bombs.
They did not see that, thanks to its nuclear arsenal, North Korea could now directly threaten the United States.
They did not understand that a possible new treaty with the United States required the agreement of the American Congress and that given the rise of the Republicans, such an agreement was unlikely.
Prepare the opinion
Biden gives the impression of wanting to prepare the public for a military attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.
He also gives the impression of seeking excuses for the first treaty with the Iranians, a treaty torn up by Donald Trump.
Because the 2015 treaty was very weak. At most it could have slowed the Iranian nuclear arms race.
Errors
Negotiations for this treaty had been led by Biden when he was vice president.
Biden is right to say that Trump made a big mistake in rejecting the treaty. But the first mistake was to believe that the treaty would prevent the Iranians from developing atomic weapons. At most, this treaty would have delayed its development.
Asked today about using military means against Iran, Biden said it was possible. He also said that the patience of the United States was not infinite.
In short, apart from a last-minute agreement, it is hard to see how a military attack against Iran will be avoided.
