Ho Chi Minh City calls on its health units to support Can Gio district

Faced with the difficulties encountered by the inhabitants of Cân Gio district in accessing health care, in particular by those suffering from chronic renal failure, the Health Department of Ho Chi Minh City has encouraged its hospitals to set up dialysis sessions in Cân Gio.

Medical workers from Le Van Thinh hospital are sent to Cân Gio to carry out dialysis sessions for patients.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Health Service, about 40 patients suffering from chronic renal failure and requiring hemodialysis sessions are currently registered in the Can Gio district. In the absence of a local dialysis unit, all patients must turn to hospitals in downtown Ho Chi Minh City for their hemodialysis sessions. This is very restrictive for them, especially for patients from the island commune of Thanh An – the only island commune of Ho Chi Minh City, directly attached to the district of Cân Gio. On average, a Cân Gio patient must devote 25 hours to a dialysis session, including travel time and the session itself. The Health Service of Ho Chi Minh City therefore recognizes the urgency of setting up a hemodialysis unit in the district of Cân Gio.

Responding to this call, the Lê Van Thinh General Hospital (Thu Duc city) volunteered to provide hemodialysis sessions in Cân Gio. Health Department officials instructed relevant units to actively collaborate with Lê Van Thinh Hospital and Cân Gio District Medical Center to carry out field studies, fully meet the necessary requirements for dialysis, and to form an evaluation committee with a view to setting up a dialysis service at the Cân Gio Health Center as soon as possible.

According to the plan, an RO system (accommodating up to 10 dialysis machines) as well as 5 dialysis machines will be installed and put into operation in a first phase at the Cân Gio District Health Center. Teams from Le Van Thinh hospital will take turns in Cân Gio to carry out dialysis sessions for patients. Cân Gio’s first dialysis unit is expected to officially start operations in October 2023.

With this support from specialized hospitals, the quality of dialysis sessions in the district of Cân Gio will be ensured.

Tang Chi Thuong, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Health Department, believes that the establishment of a dialysis unit in Cân Gio district not only meets the urgent needs of patients suffering from chronic renal failure, but is also a step in the recovery process of Cân Gio District Hospital. Currently, the Municipal Health Department is finalizing and urgently submitting to the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City the project “Strengthening and improving the health capacity of Cân Gio district by 2025 and beyond”. According to this project, the Cân Gio district hospital will be rehabilitated and associated with the Cân Gio district medical center, thus allowing the establishment of new services to meet the health care needs of the people of Cân Gio, in particular with respect to common chronic non-communicable diseases; a collaboration with the hospitals of the city will be set up to carry out specialized screening and early detection of diseases among the inhabitants of Cân Gio.

Cân Gio is a peripheral district of Ho Chi Minh City, located in the southeast, at a distance of 50 km from the city center as the crow flies. The district of Cân Gio has more than 75,000 inhabitants but faces several challenges in terms of access to health services. The major obstacle in recent years in Cân Gio district has been the shortage of medical human resources, as the region has failed to recruit doctors for the past ten years.
