On September 18, in Nice, the Mozart Institute was inaugurated. A unique place in France which offers personalized support to improve the quality of life of people with cancer, as well as that of their loved ones.

In Nice, a new institute opened its doors on September 18 to support people with cancer. Here, it is not a question of treating the disease, but rather the adverse effects that people with cancer experience. And thus, reduce the daily impact of the disease and its consequences.

What is the Mozart Institute?

The Mozart Institute is an innovative concept and a first in France. This is a structure bringing together both the Alpes-Maritimes Department and the Antoine Lacassagne Cancer Center.

Deterioration of self-image, depression, pain, reduction in physical activity… whether linked to the cancer itself or to the treatments implemented, the adverse effects are numerous. Their treatment is what we call supportive care and its aim is to improve the quality of life of patients, and to reduce the daily impact of the illness and its consequences. The Mozart Institute is a first in France.

What is the objective of the Mozart Institute?

Its main objective is to facilitate the journey of patients through personalized support by offering a program of activities, therapeutic education workshops and supportive care. », explains the Alpes-Maritimes Department.

But what are we talking about concretely? The institute offers personalized support, whether psychosocial, legal, professional or financial. In addition, departmental services are available, psychological support, socio-aesthetic advice and care, dietary support, and adapted physical activities.

Why a dedicated establishment?

According to Professor Barranger, a quarter of cancer patients do not benefit from this supportive care, even though they are an integral part of the patient’s care pathway. Moreover, all establishments which treat these pathologies must be able to offer them, as soon as the diagnosis is announced.

If in certain establishments, such as the Antoine Lacassagne center, these treatments are offered within the establishment itself. However, according to the Professor, many patients are reluctant to return to the place where they were treated, and associate the establishment with a source of stress. Hence the interest in creating a place outside the walls of the hospital.

The center is located at 17 rue Auber in Nice:

For who ?

The former Mozart clinic of 950 m², in the heart of Nice, has been rehabilitated to welcome people affected by cancer directly or indirectly, patients, relatives, caregivers or health professionals.

Either for patients during or after their treatment or for people who have a sick loved one or for caregivers. But also for health professionals, members of an association or an institution, the Mozart Institute is a place for exchanges and sharing experiences on practices and research in cancerology.

Access to this supportive care, well-being and medico-social support is free for all Maralpins, regardless of the health establishment where they are (or have been) treated. Around twenty professionals will be at their service to support them before (for prevention), during and after their treatment.

As a reminder, cancer is the leading cause of death in France, with around 160,000 deaths in 2018. In 2020, there were more than 9,000 new cases in the Alpes-Maritimes, with 40,000 patients monitored.

In 2023, the number of new cancers, all locations combined, is estimated at 433,136 cases, 245,610 in men (i.e. +0.3%) and 187,526 in women (i.e. +0.9%).
