The seven-part Netflix miniseries is based on a true story and stars Richard Gadd (series writer, 34), Jessica Gunning, Danny Kyrrane and Nava Mau.
Reindeer Baby is an adaptation of Gadd’s one-man show of the same title.
When a struggling comedian shows a little kindness to a vulnerable woman, an unhealthy obsession is unleashed that threatens to destroy both their lives.
Gann commented that although some facts were slightly modified, situations of harassment and abuse did exist.
“At first, everyone in the pub thought it was funny that I had a fan, then she started invading my life, following me around…” Gadd told The Times in an interview.
The writer and performer’s twisted relationship with his stalker and the impact she has on him forces him to confront a deep and dark trauma.
“I think she felt like she was a little magical with him. It’s an unconventional and unrequited love story from Martha’s point of view, which is how I approached it (…) I never saw it as a kind of stalker-victim story (…) I don’t think I’ve ever had the intended to be scary, even if it were received that way,” Jessica Gunning told the Los Angeles Times.
“Stalking and harassment is a form of mental illness. It would have been wrong to paint her as a monster, because she is not well and the system has failed her,” Gadd told The Intependient, BBC comments in an article.
But they have something that unites them, for some reason Donny, as Gadd is called in the series, feels good when listening to Martha’s messages.
