In 2022, Koniambo’s nickel helped Glencore’s results shine

Seventeen pages of production figures worldwide and in New Caledonia for nickel. The press release from the global commodity production and trading giant features a long list of countries, mines and factories.

It is a sort of catalog of the results of industrial activities in the vast field of energy transition. It confirms that Glencore’s global nickel production is up compared to 2021. An increase obtained mainly by the results of New Caledonia.

“In New Caledonia, nickel production volumes benefited from the operation of two production lines at the Koniambo plant for most of the year,” said Glencore.

In his introduction to Glencore’s refined results in 2022, the group’s Chairman and CEO, Gary Nagle therefore highlighted the positive results of the North plant (KNS) in New Caledonia. A factual presentation, tinged with optimism, which contrasts with those of previous years.

“Own-source nickel production of 107,500 tonnes was 5,200 tonnes (5%) higher than 2021, reflecting the planned major maintenance shutdown at Murrin Murrin (Australia editor’s note) the previous year and Koniambo’s operation of two production lines for most of 2022, partially offset by lower production due to strikes in Canada and Norway”detailed Glencore in its publication dated 1is february.

While volumes still need to increase to reach a break-even point, the production of “Koniambo” increased from 17,000 tonnes of nickel in 2021 to 25,400 tonnes in 2022. “8,400 additional tons of nickel were produced, the increase is 49%”, concludes Glencore’s press release.
