On February 11, Netflix will release Inventing Anna, the new series from Shonda Rhimes – and her first as creator four years after the end of Scandal. The opportunity for the American magazine Time to look back on the exceptional journey of this producer and screenwriter to whom streaming seems to be as successful as television in the 2000s.
“I don’t make series wondering if they will be in tune with the times.” So responds producer, writer and creator Shonda Rhimes when the magazine Time asks him his secret for designing and producing programs for nearly twenty years, many of which marked his time.
To read the long article devoted to him by the American weekly newspaper – of which Rhimes made the front page, dated January 17 to 24 –, his success is due to two main ingredients: an extraordinary work force and the ability to rely on his intuitions, far from the dictates of his environment. This is how in 2005, aged 35, the one who was still only a relatively confidential screenwriter launched what remains as her masterstroke: Grey’s Anatomy, a medical series that revolutionized the genre by notably applying the principle of a color-blind casting (literally, a “color-blind cast”, indifferent to the skin color of the actors) and “scenes of interventions in which she was not afraid to show blood and guts”.
As pointed out Time, Grey’s Anatomy “quickly became a real phenomenon”, gathering more than 22 million viewers for the last episode of its first season. If Shonda Rhimes no longer ensures the creation of the series (a responsibility transferred in 2017 to one of her collaborators within her production company, Shondaland), the latter remains one of the most durable of American television, ABC confirmed in January the production of a nineteenth season.
