In Lääneranta, there was another protest by the residents of the municipality on Thursday, because the council planned to merge all the schools that are still left in the municipality from next year.

The possibility of reopening the Metsküla school and the right to use the school building there will also be discussed at the council meeting.

Thursday’s session of the Lääneranna municipal council was once again greeted by a protest action in front of the building. If a year ago, hundreds of people gathered in front of the building with shouts and whistles, today’s protest action is silent. A dozen school desks, a sound installation and the names of schools that have been closed, truncated and now forced to merge are gathered in front of the town hall.

“Empty school desks symbolize the impact of actions carried out in the name of organizing the school network on our municipality,” explained one of the organizers of the protest action. “My children also attend a school “organized” by the municipal government, and to be honest, I am very worried. One moment several schools are thoughtlessly closed, then they want to hastily formalize the rest into one, and a new school building is promised for money that does not exist… It is very difficult to understand why it is necessary to manage the municipality so carelessly and hastily.”

In addition to the plan to bring all the schools of the municipality under one management, the municipal council is also discussing the proposal of Raul Oberschneider, who is part of the opposition, to reopen Metsküla school. In the draft that will be voted on, it is pointed out that the new state budget support for primary schools close to home would significantly reduce the municipality’s expenses for the school.
