For the first time in France, an operation was performed by cardiology nurses. This initiative took place at the University Hospital of Le Mans, in Sarthe.

In Le Mans (Sarthe), cardiology nurses operated on patients for the first time by implanting a monitor useful for detecting cardiac arrhythmias and anticipating stroke recurrences. This gesture, which is usually reserved for doctors, is now delegated to these pioneers, after a protocol studied for nearly two years. “Our European neighbors (…) had already set up this delegation”explains Jimmy Guibert, interventional cardiology nurse.

“Free up medical time”

This is a simple but time-consuming operation for doctors. “It allows us to free up medical time, especially to do consultations, which is important in an area like Sarthe which is a medical desert”, says Dr. Félix Collard, cardiologist at the University Hospital of Le Mans. Each year, 90 prostheses are fitted at the University Hospital. In a context of medical shortage, this initiative could be extended to other hospitals in France.
