In Luxembourg: The oil is flaming and it’s getting tougher for the coffee: the checkout is more expensive

LUXEMBOURG – The rise in prices over one year fell from 7% at the end of April to 6.8% at the end of May. But the supermarket basket sees its price increase. And petroleum products exploded over twelve months.

From the end of May 2021 to the end of May 2022, consumer prices in Luxembourg increased by 6.8%, against 7% a month earlier. In April and May 2022, inflation stood at 0.1%, according to figures published on Wednesday by Statec. A slight slowdown that will not relieve all wallets when shopping, with increasingly high amounts at the bottom of the receipt.

Thus, food products continue to be more and more expensive, with an increase of 0.5% over one month. Coffee (+5.9%), fats and oils (+4.8%) and seafood (+3%) are those whose prices rose the most in May compared to the same month of the year last. On the other hand, certain products saw their prices drop, in particular fresh vegetables (-10.5%, and moreover it is good for health) and soft drinks (-1.5%). Overall, going to the supermarket checkout is 5.7% more expensive today than it was a year ago.

Oil almost 50% more expensive than a year ago

For their part, the prices of oil derivatives fell by 3.9%, after four consecutive months of increase. A phenomenon which is explained, according to the Luxembourg statistical institute, by a 20% drop in town gas, thanks to the assumption of natural gas network costs from 1 May. The measure should last, for residential customers, until the end of the year. On the other hand, prices at the pump rose in May by 6.5% for petrol, 3% for diesel and 6.1% for heating oil. Worse, over one year, the prices of petroleum products have increased by 49.7%.

Among the other expenses, inflation is driven by the prices of nurseries and day centers for children (+2.4% in May), tires (+3.2%) and the heading “driving lessons and technical control » (+3.9%). Travel packages, on the other hand, are slightly cheaper in May than in April (-2.9%).
