Sotheby’sauction“This is also the world’s largest flawless diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA),” said Sophie Stevens, a jewelry expert at Sotheby’s.

Canary was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1980s. A young girl was playing among a pile of rubble near her uncle’s house when she stumbled across the unusual-looking stone, which she sold to a local diamond dealer. At the time, the rough diamond weighed 890 carats and was cut to give the appearance we see today.
