This is a serious time for “Quebec TF1”. Faced with ruthless competition from platforms like Netflix and tensions in the market, Quebecor, the Canadian media and telecoms giant which was in the running for the takeover of Editis, has decided to refocus its television subsidiary on broadcaster by announcing on Thursday a layoff plan affecting 547 people, or 31% of its employees.

The efforts already made by Quebecor, which is also the largest publisher of French-language books and press in Canada (“Le Journal de Montréal”, “Le Journal de Québec”, etc.), will not have been enough to recover the bar for its television subsidiary. In February, the Montreal group decided on 240 layoffs, including 140 in its audiovisual subsidiary, Groupe TVA, which includes both the main private channel in Quebec as well as around ten thematic channels (continuous news, sport, youth, etc. .). This summer, the group also stopped broadcasting a flagship program like “Le monde à l’envers”.
