In Tunisia, inflation and shortages have been punctuating the daily lives of residents for months. It is in this context that the local association Alert raises awareness among Tunisians about economic issues, in particular by broadcasting weekly podcasts for the public. Media financing, the price of olive oil and even the economics of income are topics covered. On the social network TikTok, some videos garner up to several hundred thousand views.

From our correspondent in Tunis,

On this cold Ramadan evening, around ten friends – most of them young people in their thirties – meet in the streets of Carthage, a suburb of Tunis.

« Every week, we meet after work on Monday to shoot a podcast which is broadcast on all platforms on Sunday morning », explains Louai Chebbi. Graduated in law in Paris, he returned to the country to teach. He also heads the Alert association.

« Three, two, one, action! », Counts one of the members. These podcasts sometimes last up to almost two hours. While the difficulties that the Tunisia — such as inflation, debt, shortages — are often explained by the authorities as being the consequences of plots targeting the Tunisian state, Alert wants to counter the official discourse, with supporting figures and demonstrations.

Accessible content that provides keys

« We noticed that the “think tanks” who normally work with writing long reports which are 80, 90 pages, sometimes 150 pages, but do not find a wide audience, an audience of lay people », Notes the president of the organization. Faced with this observation, Alert wanted to do something concrete: “ We worked on videos, with accessible content, with a language, a Tunisian vocabulary which gives the keys to these people to unlock questions which seem a little too technical. »

And economic subjects are never really unrelated to political questions. “ The economy is politics, of course. Our job is to say :We do politics by talking about economics and we do economics by talking about politics », underlines Louai Chebbi.

On the program today in the podcast filmed that day, the status of liberal professions in Tunisia. No official presenter. The most competent member of the collective leads the debates. Mehdi Jemaa, chartered accountant and member of Alert, is at the helm for this show. At 27 years old, a chartered accountant in a firm, this project is very stimulating for him: “ Honestly, I personally find meaning in it. It is a quest for meaning. I have a role somewhere and I manage to have an impact, and that honestly is my driving force. »

Today, the organization functions mainly on the involvement and generosity of its members. To guarantee the freedom of tone and independence of Alert, Mehdi Jemaa encourages listeners to put their hands in their pockets to ensure the sustainability of the program.
