The call came as world leaders gather in ten days at UN headquarters in New York for the general debate of the UN General Assembly.

ECW’s 2022 Annual Results Report indicates that the fund and its global partners have enabled 8.8 million children to benefit from a comprehensive quality education since its inception in 2016 and more than 4.2 million of children last year alone.

It adds that total funding available has increased by more than 57% in three years, from USD 699 million in 2019 to more than USD 1.1 billion in 2022.

However, the need has exploded in recent years. Funding requests for education in emergencies under humanitarian appeals almost tripled, from USD 1.1 billion in 2019 to almost USD 3 billion by the end of 2022. That year , only 30% of education needs have been funded, indicating that a gap is widening.

The fund said some of its largest donors had yet to disburse funds for the entire 2023-2026 period and that there was a funding gap from the private sector, foundations and philanthropists.

During the first half of 2023, ECW faced a funding gap of approximately USD 670 million to fully fund the outcomes of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, which will reach 20 million children over the next three years, depending on the fund.
