Braunschweig: Cat follows owner almost 1000 km from France

When Hildegard Holtschneider (74) moved from France to Düsseldorf, her cat Lisi escaped. Five months later we met again: Lisi was found in Braunschweig.

That’s what it’s about

A woman who moved from western France to Düsseldorf lost her cat Lisi on the way.

The 74-year-old searched for her beloved pet for almost six months.

Finally the cat appeared – she had apparently walked almost 1000 km to find her owner.

When Hildegard Holtschneider moved from the French Périgord to Düsseldorf last June, she not only got her household goods and her Maltese Henry, but also her cat Lisi ready to travel. On the way, the pensioner and her animals stayed overnight in a hotel in Versailles. And that’s where it happened: The cat, stressed by the move, ran away during the night and couldn’t be found in the morning. “I desperately looked for her and called all the animal protection associations, shelters and doctors in the area, but no one had seen her,” the owner told the “Rheinische Post”.

Nevertheless, Holtschneider had to go through with her move. But back in Germany, she continued the search for the chipped animal and made monthly phone calls to the responsible authorities – without success. “That broke my heart, we had a real bond,” she told the newspaper.

Walked 300 kilometers too far

A few days ago there was a relieving call: A place in France contacted Holtschneider and informed her that the Büsi had appeared at the home of a young woman named Luka in Braunschweig. The place is almost 900 kilometers by car from Versailles, over 300 kilometers further than Düsseldorf. Apparently Lisi had instinctively chosen the right direction in her search for Holtschneider.

Luka found the animal meowing loudly in front of her door and took him in. Because Lisi was so trusting, she assumed it was an indoor cat. She then found out from a vet that it was a chip from France. Braunschweig Cat Protection was then able to track down the rightful owner. When it became clear after sending a few photos to Holtschneider that it was really Lisi, they met again in Düsseldorf.

“I’m so happy that it’s worked out now,” said the young finder. “The best thing now is for the cat to come home as quickly as possible.” Lisi’s owner also sees it this way: “I will give her a nice home where togetherness is the top priority.” And she adds: “After this adventure, I will never let her go again.”
