In a report that generates expectations, The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) will announce tomorrow the impact of the increase in the cost of living during December and the entire year 2023. Inflation on the Basic Food Basket (CBA) and the Total Basic Basket (CBT) will be the focus of attention, determining the margins that define indigence and poverty in the country.
During Decembergeneral inflation reached an alarming 25.5%, while food prices experienced an average increase of 29.7%. Until November, a family made up of a couple with two children under 6 and 8 years old needed income of $185,050 to avoid falling into destitution, and $390,456 to overcome the poverty line.
The accumulated numbers until November reveal an increase of 157.4% in the cost of the CBA and 156% in the CBT for the first 11 months of 2023. According to the latest measurement available from Indec in the first half of 2023, 40.1% of the population is below the poverty line, with 9.3% living in conditions of destitution.
These shocking data indicate that, of a population of 46 million people, 18.4 million are in poverty, and one in four is destitute. The country’s economic situation poses complex scenarios and difficult solutions on the part of the government for the well-being of society.
