With 2-0 sets (6-4, 6-0) the world’s top tennis player prevailed over the Greek champion in the final of Indian Wells, she won the trophy in the California desert for the second time after 2022 when she had met the Greek again in the final champion (19th title in her career), however, Maria Sakkari with the image she showed throughout the WTA 1000 tournament sent the message that she has “returned” for good to the… high flights.
Participating in her 4th final in a 1000 tournament and 2nd in Indian Wells, the top Greek tennis player tried with all her might to put the “icing on the cake” on a fantastic week that she has had and in which, with a new coach guiding her ( Witt), proved that she has put behind her the unsuccessful results of the last few months.
However, against Iga Sfiatek, who had lost only 18 games in the five previous games she played, the 28-year-old champion did not succeed. In the 6th duel between them, the Pole managed to bring the series… even (3-3), with the victories, however, giving two titles in Indian Wells and one in Doha.
In the first set, the two finalists each made a break, first Sfiatek and then Sakkari to answer and tie at 3-3, they then held their serve (4-4), with Poland leading by 5 -4 and make a decisive second break in the 10th game (6-4), taking the lead 1-0.
The second started just like the first, with the world’s No. 1 taking a serious 3-0 lead, making a new break on Sakkari’s serve. But, this time she raised her performance sharply, with a new break she took a 4-0 lead and from then on she imposed her law to comfortably reach the victory without losing a game (6-0) and 2-0 in the sets to celebrate its first 1000 tournament title for 2024.
After this development, Maria Sakkari will remain next week at No. 9 in the world ranking and, of course, Iga Sfiatek in the “penthouse” of the WTA.
