Indiana basketball opened its 2026-27 season with a comfortable 91-57 wire-to-wire victory over Eastern Illinois at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Notre Dame transfer Markus Burton starred in his debut, recording 19 points and five assists to lead the Hoosiers.
Playing in his first regular-season contest since December 5 of the previous year, Burton put on a masterclass in efficiency for head coach Darian DeVries. He shot 7-of-8 from the field, connected on all three of his attempts from beyond the arc, and added two steals while committing just one turnover in a stellar opening night.
The Hoosiers built their success around interior dominance and relentless defensive pressure. Indiana secured a 34-26 rebounding edge, pulling down 13 offensive boards that translated into a 15-3 advantage in second-chance points. Starting 7-footers Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu combined for 17 points and 13 rebounds on 7-of-16 shooting, utilizing their size to alter opponent possessions throughout the night.
Defensive Pressure and Guard Play Drive the Season Opener
Indiana’s defensive intensity forced Eastern Illinois into 22 turnovers—the highest turnover total forced by the Hoosiers in a single game since 2021. Those defensive lapses allowed the hosts to convert 29 points directly off turnovers. Guard Jaeden Mustaf anchored the perimeter defense with three of the team’s 13 steals.
Off the bench, Bryce Lindsay provided a vital scoring spark by knocking down three 3-pointers to finish with 14 points. Trent Sisley also added baskets during a first-half stretch as Darian DeVries utilized a lineup that included Darren Harris, Sam Alexis, and other newcomers.

Despite shooting 50% from the field overall, Eastern Illinois struggled mightily against Indiana’s length on the perimeter, hitting just 3-of-14 from long range. The Hoosiers also capitalized heavily at the charity stripe, converting 24 of 32 free throw attempts compared to just 4-of-7 shooting for the Panthers.
Next Up for the Hoosiers
With a 1-0 record safely secured, Indiana turns its attention to the upcoming home slate. The team returns to action at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday to face Bellarmine at Assembly Hall.
