Individual kits for food waste are distributed to residents of Alytus district

More than 400 sets of containers and buckets for food waste have already been distributed to residents of individual houses in the Alytus district.

Kits for food and kitchen waste are distributed to residents of individual houses in the Alytus district. The set includes a 120-liter container and a 10-liter bucket.

A total of 1,223 such sets will be distributed to the residents of the district. They will be received by 285 Simno, 297 Daugai, 420 Miklusėnai, 150 Miroslava, and 71 Alytus villagers.

The food waste sets, which were bought by the Alytus region waste management center, are distributed by the employees of “Kaunas švaros”. Along with containers and buckets, residents also receive food waste sorting memos and a schedule for waste transportation. Food containers are emptied once a month in the cold season, twice a month in the warm season.

Residents who have separate containers for food waste must collect all food and kitchen waste separately. This waste includes all the waste generated in the kitchen during food production: paper towels, paper napkins, greasy paper, coffee and tea grounds, filters and packets, skins, peels, egg shells, vegetable and fruit residues, leftovers of unusable food products.

The buckets and containers distributed to residents are specially adapted for collecting food waste. The buckets are equipped with holes for air circulation – as the waste has a relationship with oxygen, bad odors are prevented.

Food waste should be collected in bags. For this, regular garbage or used shopping bags, placed in a bucket, are suitable. Waste can also be collected in used bags of weighed products. The bags must be tied tightly before throwing the waste into the container.

The service of food waste containers will not cost the residents extra. Both containers and buckets are distributed free of charge. Buckets for collecting food waste are also distributed to residents of apartment buildings. In the Alytus district, 800 people living in apartment buildings will receive them.
