Industry ad electricity market design: Adjustments make sense and are necessary

Lessons learned from the energy crisis – further development of the merit order principle to avoid extreme prices – planning security for industry

Vienna (OTS) Today’s proposal from the European Commission draws on the lessons of the past year’s excessively increased energy costs. “The excessive price fluctuations were an extreme burden for Europe as an industrial location. The new proposal is intended to avoid such rashes in the future and thus relieve domestic industry,” says Peter Koren, Vice Secretary General of the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) and Head of Infrastructure, Transport, Resources & Energy.

The Commission’s proposal basically adheres to the much-discussed merit order principle. This is quite understandable, since this model basically ensures stability and planning security in pricing, away from times of crisis. “With the new instruments, the pricing system should be made fit for extreme situations. This is intended to ensure a certain degree of stability for the domestic industry by reducing the risk of extreme price swings like last year,” adds Koren. Now the announced measures must be implemented quickly in order to bring the European electricity market back into calmer waters.
