A tomb robbery case that occurred in Aohan Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, mainland China in 2022 has recently aroused great concern in China. This case involved a group of 9 tomb robbers. They had an accident during the tomb robbery process, resulting in 3 people being poisoned and killed. The remaining 6 people realized that their deeds had been exposed and surrendered themselves. In this regard, the People’s Court of Aohan Banner in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia also sentenced the six surrenders to fixed-term imprisonment ranging from 10 months to 1 year and 8 months on August 13, and imposed corresponding fines.

However, during the digging process, rainwater flowed into the cave, hindering the progress of the tomb robbery. So they bought gasoline pumping equipment to try to drain the stagnant water. However, this turned out to be a fatal mistake, because the gasoline pumping equipment produced a large amount of carbon monoxide gas in the process, which accumulated in the hole and could not be discharged.As a result, three members of the group unfortunately died of poisoning, and the tomb robbery was exposed. The court ruled that Qian Nan and other six people, together with others, privately excavated ancient tombs with historical and scientific value, and were suspected of the crime of robbing ancient tombs, and made a judgment in accordance with Article 328 of the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China and relevant laws and regulations. Although the 6 people were dissatisfied with the judgment of the first instance and appealed, the appeal was rejected by the second instance and the original judgment was upheld.
The stolen ancient tomb in this tomb robbery case belongs to the tomb remains of the Liao and Jin Dynasties and is considered to have important historical value. As a place full of historical and cultural heritage, Aohan Banner has more than 4,000 ancient cultural sites and tombs, so it is also known as “Humanistic Aohan”.
