Infant mortality halved in 7 years in Cambodia

According to the State Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Yuok Sambath, Cambodia has seen a significant drop in maternal and child deaths over the past seven years.

Speaking at a press conference on September 15, Dr. Yuok Sambath, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health, claimed, figures from the National Institute of Statistics.

in support, that maternal and infant mortality rates have decreased between 2014 and 2022

The maternal mortality rate fell from 5‰ in 2014 to 4‰ in 2022, a decrease of 25%.

The infant mortality rate has fallen from 18‰ in 2014 to 8‰ in 2022, thus more than halving in 7 years.

Better care for women and infants

To reduce maternal mortality, Dr. Yuok Sambath said the ministry sensitized pregnant women on personal care, regular prenatal checkups and food quality. Over the past five years, some 1.41 million mothers have given birth in health facilities.

She added that children under the age of one received 11 types of vaccines to prevent the following diseases: tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, measles, hepatitis B, meningitis, pneumonia and rubella,

Dr. Yuok Sambath also recalled the support program for pregnant women and children under two, which aims to combat malnutrition among infants and children from disadvantaged families in order to promote physical and mental growth and participate promoting maternal and child well-being.
