Michel-Édouard Leclerc, president of the E.Leclerc centers, was the guest of the Morning of CNEWS this Monday, May 15. Asked by Laurence Ferrari about inflation and purchasing power, he said that “prices were not going to drop”.

“Prices are not going to come down.” The tone is set by Michel-Édouard Leclerc, president of the E.Leclerc centers. Guest of the Matinale, he wanted to warn the French that inflation was not about to decrease and would even reach a new peak “this summer”.

In recent months, the cost of certain raw materials has been falling, as well as wholesale prices, and yet these declines are not reflected in in-store prices for consumers. This is why the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, is due to receive the agri-food industrialists in Bercy this Wednesday to ask them to participate in the collective effort to lower prices.

“We are talking about breaking inflation in the second half. Food prices, the prices of daily life will not go down. There will be cuts, more promotions, but we will reach a peak of inflation this summer and the idea is that the inflation rate by the end of the year will be halved. , explained Michel-Édouard Leclerc.

The boss of the E.Leclerc stores, repeatedly accused of wanting to lower prices as much as possible to the detriment of French producers, believes that the ball is now in the court of manufacturers to limit the rise in prices for consumers.

According to Thierry Cotillard, boss of Intermarché, food inflation could experience “a peak of 17%” over one year at the end of June. “Either we are able to get manufacturers to lower their prices (…) or nothing happens and inflation remains at 17%,” he warned.

In addition to new negotiations with manufacturers, the Minister of the Economy has asked distributors to extend beyond June 15 the “anti-inflation quarter”, which he considers to be a success. With this operation, the main French distributors undertake to go beyond their usual promotions on a selection of food and non-food products to fight against inflation.
