ING Night MarathonLuxembourg’s Kinde breaks the semi record, Kiptoo wins the marathon

LUXEMBOURG – Yonas Kinde shattered the Luxembourg half-marathon record on Saturday evening with a time of 1h 7’57”. Kenyan Erick Kiptoo won the marathon.

Yonas Kinde (bib n°4203), broke the record for the half-marathon event.

The 16th edition of the ING Night marathon kept all its promises, Saturday evening in the streets of the capital. The evening got off to a flying start with Yonas Kinde’s record in the half-marathon.

Usually confined to a role of hare for marathon runners, the Luxembourger had decided this year to align himself with the 21.1 km. With a time of 1h7’57”, he kept his bet, smashing the record set in 2016 by Dane Steffen Falck by 2’33”.

“The record was my goal, explained the Luxembourg athlete on arrival. I isolated myself from the start. I ran the first five kilometers with the marathon runners, then I checked my speed, making sure there was no one behind. I did not put myself in the red, I was well prepared.

Kenyan Mercy Kipkemoi wins in the women’s category

A little over an hour later, the Kenyan Erick Kiptoo made his debut to the encouragement of the many spectators massed at LuxExpo, completing the 42.195 km in 2h13’14”, 1’12” from the record set in 2018 by his compatriot Marc Kangogo. He beat another Kenyan, James Kiplagat (2h14’40”), while Luc Scheller, 4th in 2h 37’12”, finished first from Luxembourg. A nice performance for the one who distinguished himself by winning the half last year.

Among the women, the victory went to the Kenyan Mercy Kipkemoi (2h 37’20”) ahead of her compatriot Flomena Ngurasia (2h 42’37”). Like last year, Shefi Xhaferaj, 4th in 3h12’55”, is the first Grand Ducal athlete to have crossed the line.
