Ingebritsen repeats Berlin’s 1500-5000m double

Munich (Germany): Norway’s Olympic champion Jacob Inbrightsen retained his 1500m title Thursday at the European Athletics Championships in Munich, two days after winning the 5000m gold, achieving the double for the second consecutive championship after Berlin 2018.

Under the rain, the 21-year-old dominated the 1500m race, setting a European record of 3:32.76 minutes.

The Norwegian sprinter won the 1500m and 5000m double at the 2018 Berlin Games when he was 17 years old.

“The rain reminded me at home,” said Ingbegritsen, whose record includes winning the yellow metal in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics and the silver in the same race and gold in the 5000m at the Mondial Eugene last month after his coronation.

Britain’s Jake Hayward won the silver medal (3:34.44 d.), while Spain’s Mario Garcia came third and took the bronze (3:34.88 d.).

revenge

Despite this victory, Ingbrigtsen failed to avenge Britain’s Jake Whiteman, who had dropped him in the 1500m race in Eugene, USA, who preferred not to participate in this race in the European Championship and focus on the 800m distance.

Ingebritsen established an early rhythm on his way to victory in the rain at the Munich Olympic Stadium.

With a number of fast runners in the closing yards, the Norwegian took the lead early on and ran fast and after a great first lap (56.4 seconds), Inbrightsen maintained his unyielding rhythm, while Garcia chased after him as a shadow.

The Norwegian seemed intangible in the last lap and rushed 200 meters from the end faster to take the lead, achieving a historic victory. Hayward was ahead of Garcia for second place.

The 25th edition of the European Athletics Championships is part of the second edition of the European Games to be held in Munich between 11 and 21 August, which includes other sports such as beach volleyball, gymnastics, table tennis, and others…
