Injured Silver Rail Teacher Recounts Bend School Shooting Details

The family of 7-year-old Saylor Graham-Poarch shared an update on Monday morning announcing that she has been moved out of the intensive care unit following the Oct. 15, 2026, shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Saylor and 54-year-old Becky Drury sustained critical injuries during the attack inside a special education classroom, which claimed the lives of three children and a teacher before a bystander intervened.

Saylor Graham-Poarch family statement released on Monday outlined her transition out of intensive care while emphasizing the long road ahead for the young student. She has a long recovery ahead, and right now all we want is to be with her through it, her relatives said in the statement.

The tragedy unfolded on Oct. 15 when a 16-year-old former special education student entered a special education classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School, according to local police and reports from the Statesman Journal. The gunman killed 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert and three children: 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, along with two boys aged 8 and 11. The attacker was subsequently killed by Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two students at the school.

Recovery and Community Support Following the Bend Shooting

Following the shooting, Saylor was initially treated at St. Charles Bend before being transferred to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital for specialized care. Beyond the physical trauma of the incident, Saylor manages a gene mutation disorder known as CASK, which disrupts brain development and causes cognitive and physical challenges. During the 2024-25 school year, she was selected as Bend High School’s “Sparrow,” a program through nonprofit Sparrow Clubs that pairs children with life-altering medical conditions with schools that fundraise on their behalf.

Community support has emerged through multiple channels, including two GoFundMe campaigns established to assist with Saylor’s recovery, which have collectively raised over $1 million. Additionally, sweatshirts designed by Saylor’s mother have been sold to support the family, with nearly 250 units sold by Monday morning. Memorial tributes have also honored the victims, including a service held on a Saturday at Caldera High School for teacher Megan Lambert, as reported by Your Oregon News.

Even as we’re grateful for Saylor’s progress, our hearts are broken for the families of the three children and the teacher who were killed. We are holding them close, and we grieve with them, her family stated. They also expressed appreciation for the public response: Thank you to everyone who has reached out, prayed for Saylor, sent messages, and shown our family so much love during the hardest time of our lives.

Injured Teacher Details Events of the Attack

Becky Drury, who was critically injured during the shooting, released a detailed account of the incident to the public. Drury described hearing commotion outside, stepping out to investigate, and running back inside after spotting the shooter. She attempted to close the classroom door, but the armed individual reached the threshold and shot her at close range before she could take further action.

Lying on the floor, I saw that my left hand was almost completely severed from the gunshot, and my other arm was also severely injured, Drury said in her statement. Unable to defend herself or others, she stated that she pretended to be dead in hopes the shooter would not fire again. Drury is currently recovering at St. Charles Bend, where a separate GoFundMe campaign established for her care had raised $170,000 by the afternoon of Oct. 21.

While Bend-La Pine schools, except for Silver Rail, resumed classes on an early release schedule on Oct. 21, the school remained closed as students, staff, and families navigate the aftermath of the shooting.
