A few meters from the finish line, Femke Bol (23/Netherlands) is just ahead of Alexis Holmes (23/USA). Suddenly, Bol loses his balance and falls forward, slamming full on her face.

A horror moment for the European champion, who also won bronze in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Bol on TV channel NOS: “I don’t know exactly why it went wrong. My legs didn’t want to go anymore. I have this a lot and then I can still recover, but unfortunately not tonight. I think sometimes people think I’m a machine. I think I’ve shown now that I’m not.”

And further: “I don’t understand why I didn’t have legs. I should just be able to finish, but I really don’t understand why I can’t. I don’t feel anything now, but I will feel it later when… the adrenaline is gone.”

Bol teammate Isaya Klein Ikkink (20), who handed her the baton: “It’s not done until the baton crosses the finish line. For a moment your world will collapse. At first you don’t think about the medal, but above all about how Femke is doing.”

In the end, the fall didn’t even give the Netherlands an official result. Instead, the relay is disqualified, automatically ending up in last place.

The British team took second place, with the Czech Republic taking bronze.
