More than 55 million people have dementia worldwide, according to the WHO. One study mentions that chronic intake of this type of medication would increase the risk.

Prise d’IPP

The dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among the elderly worldwide. A study was carried out by American scientists who particularly focused on the correlation between its development and the regular intake of a certain type of medication.
They looked into the prise d’IPP (Proton pump inhibitors) which are widely prescribed in France to treat heartburn and acid reflux.

For several years

Le magazines Current wife states that researchers have found a higher risk of dementia in people who take these drugs for several years.
To carry out this study, published in the journal Neurologythey looked at data specific to 5,712 people who did not suffer from dementia, with an average age of 75 years. Among all participants, 26% were taking IPP during the search.

Risk of more than 30%

The results showed that people aged 45 and over, who took IPP for more than 4.5 years have a 33% higher risk of developing dementia than people who have never taken it.
In detail, of the 4,222 volunteers who did not take medication, 415 developed a dementia while of the 497 people who used IPP for almost 4 and a half years, 58 have developed it.

It is only an association

This study does not prove that acid reflux drugs cause dementia“, however, underlined Kamakshi Lakshminarayan, lead author of the study.
According to him, it is only an association. Thus, further research is needed to confirm the findings in other large study groups and to understand the possible link between long-term use ofIPP and the higher risk of dementia.
