Two rooms dedicated to the well-being of people struggling with mental health issues were inaugurated at the short-term adult mental health unit at CHAUR in Trois-Rivières.

This represents an investment of more than $30,000, including a donation of $15,500 from the Carmand Normand Foundation which made it possible to purchase the equipment to furnish these two new rooms dedicated to users of the short-term care unit. duration in adult mental health.

“When the Trois-Rivières Health Foundation presented the project to us, our hearts were immediately touched by this vision of improving the lives of those with mental health problems,” says Fannie-Claire Normand, director of the Carmand Normand Foundation. . It resonates with our mission to contribute to the material portion of projects to break the isolation of seniors and support people living with mental health disorders.

The project made it possible to create a supervised multisensory calming room. It is an environment controlled in terms of stimuli, whether through light, sounds, odors and visual effects.

“We can also project images on television. Users can use different textures. There is heavy soothing equipment, aromatherapy, bean bags. It is intended to be a room where users can refocus on their inner well-being, particularly in periods of anxiety, depression or aggression, for example,” explains Mélissa Carrier, head of specialized mental health services – central zone, assistant management – Accommodation and specialized mental health services at the CIUSSS MCQ.

Thanks to this room, the team in place hopes to be able to reduce the use of isolation and medication to promote calm among users. “We would like the calming room to allow people to be more sensitive to the warning signs of a crisis and for them to become more independent in finding tools to calm down and return to calm,” adds Ms. Carrier.

“Reducing the use of sedative medications also helps avoid a battery of side effects. Patients will also have better lifestyle habits that they can then integrate into their daily lives,” adds Dr. Jean-Philippe Pellerin, psychiatrist at the CIUSSS MCQ.

The other area is a training room which will now allow physical activity to be integrated into therapy. The practice of physical activity by people living with a mental health disorder helps reduce tension and anxiety in order to achieve a good level of general well-being. There is a stationary bike, a rower, an elliptical exerciser, a treadmill, balls and several other training equipment.

“These two therapeutic areas will contribute to the recovery of people through innovative methods. The addition of physical activity has many benefits for mental health and also allows us to be in contact with users in a less formal context,” explains Ms. Carrier.

It would also be the only training room to be located directly in the short-term mental health unit among the Mauricie hospitals. This has the advantage of allowing users who cannot leave the unit to still benefit from the installation.

“It is with projects like this that the mission of the Fondation Santé Trois-Rivières takes on its full meaning. It represents a window on new recovery opportunities for the people here. These additional resources for patients are much more than a simple improvement in mental health services: they are an outstretched hand towards a brighter future where everyone can regain their emotional balance and reintegrate into society with confidence,” concludes Annie Brousseau. , general director of the Trois-Rivières Health Foundation.
