After the fatal accident at the military training area in Allentsteig in October 2023, in which a type 2A4 tank crashed five meters deep, the report of the army’s internal investigative commission is now available, as Colonel Michael Bauer told the OÖN upon request.
Accordingly, there was no evidence of a technical problem. The question remains open as to whether there was human misconduct relevant to criminal law. But that’s not the army’s job, says Bauer. The Krems public prosecutor’s office has to decide on this; the report has already been sent to the judiciary. The commission also did not make any significant recommendations for changes to the guidelines for tank exercises.
As reported, the commander, a 24-year-old officer from the Innviertel, was killed in the accident. Three other soldiers from the Welser Panzer Battalion 14 were injured.
